World Refugee Day: Ride for Refuge!
June 20, 2015
By Simon Chambers
Today, on World Refugee Day, PWRDF invites you to participate with other supporters of PWRDF on Saturday, October 3, 2015 in the Ride for Refuge! Join with other members of your parish, or create your own route to ride or walk, and fundraise to support PWRDF partner Refuge Egypt along the way! In 2014, riders from coast to coast helped PWRDF raise over $18,000 to support refugees in South Sudan. This year, we’d like to see even more teams riding to support the life saving work of Refuge Egypt in Cairo.
The Ride for Refuge has routes in cities across Canada, and teams can choose to ride 10, 25 or 50km, or to walk 5km. The Ride is a child-friendly event, making it ideal for parish families to do together! More details can be found here.
Refuge Egypt
Refuge Egypt is a long-term PWRDF partner operating out of the Anglican Cathedral in Cairo. For years, Refuge Egypt has provided basic assistance, education, employment, and medical services to Sudanese refugees who have settled in Cairo. The recent influx of Syrian refugees fleeing the violence in their home country has stretched the capacity of Refuge Egypt to support refugees in their city.
PWRDF supports the Well Baby and Well Child clinics operated by Refuge Egypt, which provide health care, and promote healthy physical development and nutrition in refugee babies and children and their families.
World Refugee Day
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 59.5 million people had been forced to flee their homes. An average of 42,500 people became refugees, asylum seekers, or internally displaced every day last year. And half of these refugees are children.
On World Refugee Day, PWRDF asks your prayers for refugees around the world, for all who have been forced to flee their homes by war, disaster, or climate change. We give thanks for our partner agencies like Refuge Egypt who care for refugees around the world, and for all in Canada who work to bring refugee families to Canada. And we pray that one day our world will be a truly just, healthy and peaceful world.
