On this Remembrance Day, we take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of those who have served and died in war.
Among the countless stories of courage, one remarkable Canadian stands out – Lieutenant Gordon DeBlois, a young man from St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. A memorial fund of the church honouring his bravery and desire for peace has recently made a significant donation to PWRDF to support our work in Gaza.
In a letter written on December 19, 1943, just eight days before his death, Lt. DeBlois expressed his hopes and fears for the world post-war:
“Some of us have to pay the price, if we are to have a better world when the war is over, but it always seems that the best lads are the ones who are taken. I only hope that when this war is over, people won’t forget those who died to save them, and let the world drift along with poverty and ignorance as usual, until another war wakes them once again.”
His words remind us of the importance of not only remembering the fallen but also honouring their sacrifice. By working towards a world free from the cycles of poverty, ignorance, and conflict that fuel wars, we work in the light of God.
Canada played a significant role in World War II, joining the fight against Germany in 1939. Canadian troops, equipment, and supplies helped turn the tide of the war. Besides fighting in in major battles like D-Day and the liberation of the Netherlands, Canadian troops battled in Italy in key cities like Ortona and the Gothic Line, suffering significant losses. Despite this, they helped free Italy from German control, contributing to the Allied victory.
DeBlois was fatally injured by a landmine in Italy during the Ortona battle in January 1944. DeBlois’ final moments were marked by his selfless concern for his fellow men, as he warned them to stay back until the mines were cleared. His bravery and sacrifice embody the values of his faith, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.
After the war, DeBlois’ family created the Gordon R. DeBlois Peace Memorial Fund to foster peace and support the advancement of the Gospel worldwide. This fund has made significant contributions to the Anglican community, promoting peace, understanding, and reconciliation. His legacy stands to serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the power of faith and compassion to transform communities.
The DeBlois Peace Memorial Fund has once again demonstrated its commitment to promoting peace and justice worldwide. A recent donation of $25,000 has been made to support Gaza relief efforts. This generous gift is a testament to the impact of DeBlois’ selfless sacrifice and his family’s dedication to advancing peace and reconciliation. The Parish Council’s thoughtful management of the fund has enabled this extra gift to be made, furthering the important work of PWRDF in Gaza.
The DeBlois Peace Memorial Fund has also supported relief efforts in Ukraine. As the conflict in Eastern Europe continues to displace families and communities, the fund has responded with compassion and generosity. A significant donation has been made to PWRDF’s Ukraine Appeal, providing vital aid and support to those affected by the war.
The Gordon R. DeBlois Peace Memorial Fund aligns with PWRDF’s mission to create a truly just, healthy and peaceful world. It promotes peace and reconciliation, supports communities, advances justice and human rights, empowers locals, and addresses conflict root causes. Through its contributions, the fund fosters peace, while promoting the Gospel worldwide.
On November 11th, we honour the sacrifices of Lieutenant Gordon DeBlois and all those who have served and continue to serve in the military. We remember the ultimate sacrifice of those who have given their lives in service, and we pray for peace and reconciliation in our world. The Gordon R. DeBlois Peace Memorial Fund serves as a necessary reminder of the importance of working towards peace and understanding.
