El Salvador: Pew Bulletin Story 2000
Don Carlos Bonilla Velasco is a man with a grade four education and the infinite wisdom of one who has known both tragedy and triumph in his lifetime. Don Carlos accompanied his community of Santa Marta as they fled into exile in Honduras during El Salvador’s bloody civil war. Six years later he led them back to rebuild Santa Marta, literally from the ground up, with support from PWRDF partner ADES (Association for Economic and Social Development). Today, as ADES president, Don Carlos is busier than ever as he works with ADES staff who carry out a variety of projects in the education, health and environmental fields, as well as establishing revolving loan funds and a community radio station.
