Since the earthquake and tsunami struck the northern part of Japan on March 11, PWRDF has been working with the Anglican Communion of Japan (Nippon Sei Ko Kai) to provide relief to those affected by the disaster.  We heard this week about the efforts of the St. Timothy’s in Onahama, Iwaki city, Fukushima Prefecture.

St. Timothy’s church building was not badly damaged in the tsunami, and is being used as a food distribution centre.  The neighborhood around St. Timothy’s includes ten nursing homes which are in desperate need of food.  The local grocery stores were washed away or heavily damaged in the tsunami and are not open.

The church has worked with ecumenical groups to provide food to the people of the neighborhood, especially the elderly.  The food is being donated by individuals, local groups, and other organizations within Japan.  Due to a shortage of gasoline, they have had difficulty transporting the food.  In response to this need, the Diocese of Tokyo asked local Anglicans to donate food.  They were able to deliver two van loads full of food to St. Timothy’s for distribution.

PWRDF continues to support the efforts of the Church of Japan and Church World Service in responding to this disaster.  Our response will be guided by the Most Rev’d.  Nathaniel Makatso Uematsu, Archbishop of the Anglican Communion of Japan.  His statement about the disaster and the current needs can be found here.
