Two powerful typhoons rocked the Philippines September 24 and 27, 2011.  Over 5 million people have been affected by the storms–losing homes, infrastructure–and over 50 people were killed.  PWRDF is responding through the ACT Alliance, a global coalition of 111 churches and agencies involved in relief and development work.

PWRDF has committed an initial $20,000 to the National Council of Churches of the Philippines, both a PWRDF and ACT partner.  PWRDF’s support will help to provide food, shelter, medical aid, livelihood, and psychosocial care to 10,000 affected families about 60,000 people.

A thousand families will be part of a work-for-food program to repair damaged community facilities and houses, rehabilitate farmland, or build new homes.  Seeds, animals and tools will be provided for families who have lost their means of livelihood.  PWRDF will also help NCCP prepare people for future disasters by conducting disaster risk reduction seminars and workshops.
