Irish-born Margo Hearne has lived in Masset, Haida Gwaii since 1974 and attends and supports St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Masset. She has worked as a commercial fisher and environmental activist on island and led the fundraising effort to restore Delkatla Wildlife Sanctuary to its original estuarine status and build the Nature Centre at Delkatla. With her husband, Rev. Canon Peter Hamel, she manages both the Nature Centre and the local St. Paul’s Thrift Shop which provides an essential service to local communities.
She was parish representative at 15 Diocesan Synods and was a member of General Synod 2013, 2016 and 2019. She was Assistant Lay Secretary to General Synod 2019. She has written two books on local birds and is a columnist and photographer. Margo was nominated to PWRDF in June 2019.
