Long-time volunteer Dr. Hugh Chambers remembered for financial acumen

July 29, 2021

By Christine Hills

Dr. Hugh Robert Chambers was a long-time PWRDF volunteer in the department of finance. He died on July 4, 2021 at age 88.

Hugh Chambers began volunteering at PWRDF in 1997. Due to his experience and qualifications, a specific job description was drawn up which included working directly with Jill Martin, Manager of Finance.

The provincial grants for overseas development from Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan were important to Anglicans in those provinces who wanted to see their tax dollars used through PWRDF. However, accessing the funds was labour intensive, and the subsequent reporting was detailed and required a high level of program understanding. Hugh took over this work updating and streamlining the process in exemplary fashion for more than 10 years. He was also an important part of a focus group on the incorporation of PWRDF and served on a panel to establish guidelines when the Diocese of Toronto’s FaithWorks began directing funds to PWRDF.

Hugh was a welcome part of the staff team. He shared in our joys and sorrows and remained committed to the mission of PWRDF. In 2007, Hugh was welcomed as an honorary associate of PWRDF.

In the words of Jill Martin, you could set your calendar and watch by his presence. Hugh was a quiet, unassuming gentleman – in all of the best ways.
