PWRDF has pledged an initial grant of $20,000 to the ACT Alliance response in Cuba.

Hurricane Sandy has killed 11 people and caused significant damage in Cuba. ACT member (and PWRDF partner) the Cuban Council of Churches (CCC) has activated the network of churches and ecumenical organizations to visit the affected areas and to support the disaster relief work among the population which cannot be covered by the government. CCC will provide food, water, bedding, hygiene kits, as well as counsellors to speak with those affected. This aid will support vital needs in terms of nutrition and health. The CCC is initially targeting 50,000 affected people in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguin and Las Tunas, with Granma as a priority due to its level of vulnerability.

In addition, PWRDF is monitoring the needs in Haiti, which was also hit hard by the storm.  PWRDF is also contacting all Canadian dioceses which are currently expected to be affected by Sandy to monitor the situation across the country as the storm continues on its path.

We will continue to update the PWRDF website, Facebook page, and Twitter as we get more information about the needs and our response to this storm.

UPDATE: Marlene Grundstrom from Lutheran World Relief (LWF) Haiti emailed PWRDF today with information from that country.  “Over the weekend our rapid assessments have shown that the damage is quite significant, and possibly more severe than after Isaac… [T]he rural communities that we work with have acute needs which require urgent attention, including hundreds of families whose houses have been destroyed and displaced families living in temporary shelter,” said Grundstrom in her email.

PWRDF had already sent LWF Haiti funds for Hurricane Isaac relief, and has agreed to allow LWF Haiti to use up to $68,000 of those funds to cover their immediate needs in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
