PWRDF partner, Centro de Derechos Humanos de las Mujeres, the Centre for Women’s Human Rights (CEDEHM), in Mexico has been honoured with a Hermila Galindo Award.  The prestigious award honours individuals and Civil Society Organizations that have contributed to the development of a culture of respect for the rights of Mexican women. The award is presented by the Human Rights Commission, comisión de Derechos Humanos del Distrito Federal, (CDHDF) in Mexico City.  CEDEHM is fully involved in the complaint and follow-up investigations around feminicides (the killing of women).  From January 1 to February 28, 2011, 79 women have been murdered in Mexico, 52 of them in Ciudad Juárez.

In a telephone interview, the director of CEDEHM, Luz Estela Castro Rodríguez, said the award to the organization “means a lot and is greeted with great humility, it is a recognition of the women’s movement in the state of Chihuahua and the work done. She added, “Con este reconocimiento nos sentimos arropadas y fortalecidas; es un gesto de acompañamiento en el contexto que vivimos de peligro y es dedicado a todas aquellas mujeres que ya no se encuentran con nosotras como lo son Marisela Escobedo, Susana Chávez y los hermanos Reyes.” (“With this award we are enveloped and strengthened, it is a gesture of support in the midst of the danger in which we live and is dedicated to all women who are no longer with us such as Marisela Escobedo, Susana Chavez, and to the Reyes siblings.”)

CEDEHM was nominated to this award by Catolicas por el Derecho a Decidir, Catholics for a Free Choice, On behalf of CEDEHM Alma Gomez Caballero attended  the ceremony on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.
