It’s Easy Being Green

Members of the Tamil refugee community living in Tamil Nadu, India have become world leaders in cultivating spirulina, a nutrient rich algae that is abundant in protein and is given to children and nursing mothers.

PWRDF partner the Organisation for Eelam Refugees Rehabilitation (OfERR) is a not-for-profit, non-political organization run by Sri Lankan refugees for refugees.  Spirulina is a nutritional supplement produced with methods pioneered by OfERR and is an income generating program.

What we have accomplished:

There are almost 70,000 Tamil refugees still living in camps in India.  Refugees who receive training in the cultivation of spirulina return to their camps and in turn train others.

Spirulina is often referred to as a miracle food by those who cultivate it, and those who use it to supplement their diets and produce an income.

Fred’s Goal:

Your gift of $250 will outfit a refugee camp with spirulina tanks that will supplement diets, boost the nutritional intake of refugees living in the camps and also provide an income to support their families.
