PWRDF Responding to Second Nepal Earthquake

In the first few weeks after the April 25 earthquake that killed over 8000, injured tens of thousands more, and destroyed more than half a million houses in the Kathmandu area of Nepal, PWRDF has been part of relief efforts by a variety of ACT Alliance members in the country.  That work has helped more than 40,000 people through the provision of food, tarpaulins, blankets, medicine, clean water, school kits, temporary class rooms and more.

On May 12, a deadly aftershock measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked the region, causing more damage to already devastated regions, and blocking roads and other access to remote communities in the mountains near Mount Everest.  This second quake also caused buildings damaged in the April quake to collapse, and triggered landslides in the region.

ACT members, already responding to the April quake, are performing a rapid assessment of needs in the areas affected by this second quake.  There is concern about access to remote communities that have been affected by these quakes, especially as monsoon season is due to arrive in June and could cause even more damage to roads.

Your help is still urgently needed to respond to the growing needs in Nepal.  All donations received by May 25, 2015 earmarked for Nepal earthquake relief from individual Canadians will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Canadian government into their Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund.  Relief agencies, including PWRDF, may apply through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) to access some of these funds for relief projects in Nepal.
