PWRDF Announces $15,000 in relief funding after Saskatchewan Wildfires

“As of last Friday [July 3, 2015] there were 5,588 evacuees due to forest fires,” said Bishop Michael Hawkins of the Diocese of Saskatchewan in a message to PWRDF.  “On Friday night, fire penetrated the Montreal Lake Cree nation and nine houses were burned.”

The number of evacuees has grown to over 12,000, with people being sheltered as far away as Regina or Cold Lake, Alberta.  PWRDF, in consultation with Bishop Hawkins, has announced an initial grant of $15,000 to the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), a tribal council representing 12 First Nations with about 30,000 members.

PAGC  is providing meals, clothing, and shelter to supplement the Red Cross’ efforts, as the needs have overwhelmed the Red Cross’ capacity to respond.  PAGC is also helping to transport evacuees and to provide medical care to evacuees as needed, and is supporting the firefighters who are battling the wild fires.
