On Saturday, October 4, 2014, 40 supporters of PWRDF put their feet to their pedals and joined the Ride for Refuge to raise funds for PWRDF’s work in South Sudan.  The 40 riders made up 10 teams who rode in different cities from Cape Spear, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia.

PWRDF volunteers, clergy, children, staff, friends, and family all rode, raising  over $17,000 to date for a project providing over 10,000 people with food while their crops grow in the communities they have settled in after fleeing the violence in South Sudan.  More information about this project can be found here.

PWRDF is partnering with Finn Church Aid and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank for this project, which will receive matching funds from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), multiplying the proceeds from the Ride four times!

Peter Goodwin, PWRDF Diocesan Representative for the Diocese of New Westminster, was very enthusiastic about the event.  In an email to PWRDF, he highlighted an important aspect of this kind of event: “What is significant is that several of our riders  and their supporters are not members of the Anglican Church but were most enthusiastic to support PWRDF in its efforts to assist the displaced peoples in South Sudan especially knowing their dollars would be matched four times over by the federal government.”  Public events like this allow PWRDF to reach beyond its traditional support base and work with new people who may not be Anglican, but who recognize the good work done by PWRDF and want to help enable it.

It’s not too late to support this year’s Ride for Refuge.  You can donate to PWRDF here by choosing the team you’d like to support from the 10 PWRDF teams across the country.
