ACT AllianceLast month PWRDF announced an initial $25,000 grant to the Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) appeal through the ACT Alliance to support the continuing work of the Ahli Arab Hospital, an Anglican ministry located in Gaza City run by the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem. Since the beginning of the crisis, Ahli Arab Hospital staff has maintained an around-the-clock presence at the hospital, receiving wounded people and providing them with the critical medical care that they need.

During this time, Ahli Arab Hospital has treated approximately 3,300 patients.  On average each day the hospital receives 15 patients suffering from wounds and 55 burn patients, as well as 150 patients, mostly children, suffering with illnesses and infections as a result of lack of food, water and adequate hygiene. Many people are in need of psychosocial care.

The grant from PWRDF will help to provide fuel to keep the hospital operational around the clock, medications and medical supplies to help care for those wounded in the continuing violence as well as their regular patients, and to provide counselling and support to women and children affected by the ongoing violence.

The Diocese of Ottawa is in a companion relationship with the Diocese of Jerusalem and PWRDF has had a relationship with the Ahli Arab Hospital for more than two decades.  Last fall, PWRDF worked with NCA to help place a Canadian nurse in the hospital for a month of volunteer work. About her time in Gaza, Allison Kittleson said, “I can see the spirit of these people and feel the hope in their hearts”¦ despite life being so hard.  I have met the most generous people in the world, the most welcoming and some of the kindest”.
