Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada and President of the PWRDF Board of Directors has signed a letter from PWRDF and the Anglican Church of Canada to the Canadian government about the humanitarian situation in South Sudan.  PWRDF’s Executive Director Adele Finney and Andrea Mann, the Global Relations Director of the Anglican Church of Canada, are co-signatories on the letter.

In the wake of more than a month of violence in the world’s newest nation, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands fleeing the conflict, PWRDF and the ACC are calling on the Canadian government:

  • to issue a strong statement calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an unconditional ceasefire by the parties in the conflict;
  • to continue to develop a cohesive strategy for ensuring aid reaches those most in need
  • to use all means at its disposal to hold South Sudanese political leaders accountable for not exacerbating ethnic tension;
  • to pay special attention to supporting the efforts of local civil-society leaders ““particularly the faith community of South Sudan ““ who have longstanding credibility as peacemakers; and
  • to call for the release of political prisoners held by the government of South Sudan, whose voices must be at the negotiating table, as an important gesture toward bringing about a ceasefire and a negotiated peace.

The full text of the letter can be downloaded [documents_link docid=”234″ docname=”here” link_only=”yes”] .

Adele Finney urges Canadian Anglicans to continue to pray for peace in South Sudan, and for those affected by the violence.

PWRDF is already engaged in relief efforts for those displaced by the violence through the ACT Alliance.  PWRDF has published an interview with Raphael Nyabala from the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya about the refugee crisis the violence in South Sudan is creating.  You can also read more on this story from the Anglican Church of Canada here.
