The Season of Green Hunger

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank’s Executive Director Jim Cornelius has just returned from Burkina Faso, where he was visiting the drought region with Canada’s Minister for International Cooperation, Julian Fantino.

Jim said, “…As you drive through the country, everything looks green. The rains have been good and the crops are developing well.  However, the harvest is still many weeks away, and this is the time of ‘green hunger’ when everything looks great, but the granaries are empty.  Food prices remain very high in the region.  Those you talk to all speak about how difficult it is for households to purchase the food they need.”  CFGB has published more about Jim’s trip here.

Minister Fantino, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), announced that the Canadian government would match, dollar for dollar, donations made by Canadians to the relief effort in Burkina Faso and other countries in the Sahel region of West Africa until September 30, 2012.

PWRDF is part of that relief work through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, which has committed over $10 million in food and other aid to the region through PWRDF and its 14 other church members.

Please continue to support the Sahel response!  Together, we can help to support farmers in Burkina Faso and other countries to bridge the gap between their hunger today and their crops which will be ready to harvest in several weeks.  You can donate:
