Seven Days to Tend the Earth
Lenten Reflections

Introduction

“This beautiful earth sustains us, and whether or not we recognize the mysteries of all living and non-living things, God is indeed present in them.  The act of producing food is one of the best ways to reflect on the secrets of creation.  We too often forget that creation is a constant activity of God rather than a single moment when God formed the world, wound it up and set it in motion.  When we grow, raise, tend or catch food we are direct participants in this activity and we benefit spiritually when we recognize our own role in it.”

As we enter into the season of Lent PWRDF invites you to reflect on food ““ its production and consumption ““ and how it connects us to our families, communities, global partners and God’s creation.

Each week through the seven weeks of Lent we will be posting excerpts from “Fast for Change ““ 7 Days to Tend the Earth“ a booklet containing scripture passages, reflections, and ideas for action and change for each of you to consider.  The booklet is produced by the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) of which PWRDF is a member.  The complete booklet and other Fast for Change resources are available at the link above.

Together with “7 Days to Tend the Earth” we will be posting a story from a PWRDF partner that helps to illustrate the CFGB resource through the lives, work and relationships to food and the land that they seek to nurture.  Our seventh week will offer stories and reflections from the PWRDF staff team that were gathered just prior to the Lenten season in order to share some of our experiences as they relate to the theme of Sabbath rest for the land and its inhabitants.

We hope all of this will enrich your Lenten journeys, and your own reflections on food, family, community, global partners and God’s creation.  If you do carry out one or more of the actions suggested in the CFGB resource write to us and we will post what you send.  And if you wish to act through giving, we encourage you to donate to CFGB.  Please make sure you enter “Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (Anglican Church of Canada)” under the “Member Designation” space.

Your support for the PWRDF account at CFGB will enable us, together with our partners, to continue to be co-creators with God of the food that nourishes and sustains us all.
