PWRDF is Part of Sahel Food Crisis Response

PWRDF, as a member of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, is part of a major $10.9 million response to the ongoing food crisis in the Sahel region of Africa.  Over 15 million people are currently facing food shortages in the Sahel (a sub-Saharan region that stretches across Africa from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea.)

CFGB’s response will reach 324,000 people in need in Niger, Sudan, Mali, and Burkina Faso.  PWRDF has committed funds to a project in Niger, where 70% of people live on less than $1 per day and 82% depend on agriculture as their main source of income.  2011 harvests were poor in Niger after the rains ended early.  The crops stopped growing when the rains stopped falling.  Bird and insect infestations further affected the crops, leading to widespread hunger among people and livestock.
