In the year 2002, the Secretary-General of the UN created the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to address issues of extreme poverty, education, health care, and environmental sustainability.
They are:

By 2015 to:

 1. Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop a global partnership for development

PWRDF’s work can be categorized under many of these goals, and the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC) has been proud to stand up and call on governments to remember their commitment to these goals.  Henriette Thompson, Director of Partnerships for the Anglican Church of Canada, said in an e-mail to Hellen Wangusa, the Anglican Observer to the UN, “We hope and pray that the UN MDG Summit will generate the serious political commitment that is necessary to tackle the injustices that continue to undermine the dignity of people loved by and made in God’s image.”  Thompson described the work of the Primate, Archbishop Fred Hiltz, in hosting the Interfaith Leaders’ Summit in June, and also highlighted work with Kairos.

The UN has hosted high-level meetings on the MDGs from September 20-22, 2020 in New York.  With 5 years left until the goals are hoped to be achieved, these meetings were a chance to check in on the status of the goals and discuss what more needs to be done.

Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, posted this video discussing these meetings.
