PWRDF Christmas message 2009

Christ is here amongst us — this is the message of Advent and Christmas.  Imagine, Christ our Saviour, comes to us as a baby — a messy, demanding, vulnerable baby — not as a king, and certainly not as a typical leader.
Jesus, the Christ, came with “a new teaching” (Mark 1:27).  Part of that teaching for me is reflected in the myriad of teachings from my daughter at every stage of her life.  In her three and a half years, she has taught me to laugh more, how to stretch my patience, and how healing love is.  My daughter’s birth and Jesus’ new teaching has realised for me the experience of being the mother of all children and of suffering with the parents of all children.
Jesus’ teachings are never just personal.  His teachings transform us in a way that they are meant to be shared.  Part of Jesus’ new teaching is fulfilled for me with The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund.  PWRDF works with communities to realise their aspirations for a better future for their children.
If all of life were judged by the life of a child — by the life of all children, what would we do differently?  Through PWRDF, the Anglican Church of Canada works with communities to fulfill a truly just, healthy and peaceful vision.
Kenyan communities are working with PWRDF to support AIDS-orphaned children being raised by their grandmothers, Burundian communities are working with PWRDF to build family medical and HIV clinics, Mexican communities are working with PWRDF to realise reproductive rights of Indigenous women, Peruvian communities are working with PWRDF to realise their rights in the midst of a complex reconciliation process, Bangladeshi communities are working with PWRDF to provide medical care and education to children living in brothels, a Sri Lankan refugee community is working with PWRDF to provide nutrition and education for their children, Nishanawbe Aski communities are working with PWRDF to prevent suicide amongst their youth, and Mohawk communities are working with PWRDF to teach children and families their language and ot their culture.
“Making the decision to have a child is momentous.  It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body”.  (Elizabeth Stone)
Advent’s teaching is that we are all parents of the world’s children.  Our heart is walking around in every child.
May Advent’s hope, joy, peace and love be realised in your heart, home and community this Christmas.
Christmas blessings,
