Torrential rains since the end of July 2006 have caused widespread flooding in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Many lives have been lost. The floods have also caused widespread damage to property, standing crops, flood control embankments and other basic infrastructure. Thousands of houses are damaged or destroyed.  People are facing a scarcity of food, drinking water, shelter and clothing. Those who have managed to escape to safety are currently deprived of the basic necessities of life. The loss to crops and livestock is massive.

PWRDF has contributed $15,000 towards the Action by Churches Together International appeal for US$ 2,339,437.  The relief effort is being implemented by three local members of the ACT alliance.

CASA aims to mitigate the effects of the floods on 29,000 of the most affected families in the areas of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Orissa and Rajasthan.  In addition to clothing, blankets and temporary shelter, CASA will provide cooked food and dry rations as a step towards self-sufficiency and to encourage people to return to their habitations as the waters recede.

ACT member, Lutheran World Service India,  plans to work with the most affected people in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh states. They are working to help people return to normalcy as fast as possible by providing for basic needs. LWSI will also distribute school kits to 5,000 children to assist them in continuing their education. Through construction of improved houses and the planting fruit trees, LWSI aims to assist people to reduce their vulnerability in future disasters.

ACT member United Evangelical Lutheran Church in India is working in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, with 8,000 families focusing on Adivasis and Dalits. They will provide materials to meet basic needs, health care, drinking water and assist families whose houses were damaged.  UELC will also provide livelihood assistance to poor farmers who lost cattle and assist them in seeking compensation.  At the community level, they will undertake the repair of transportation routes on water and land.

PWRDF is able to respond to these urgent needs because of the ongoing generosity of undesignated donations. Thank you for your support.
